Week 9

Of course i never take anything on the internet as the truth. Even the ones in the newspaper websites. They are all written by humans and what they write might heavily be influenced by their perceptions and personal prejudice. The only websites that i take as quite true and accurate are the ones that is factual websites and non-profit information websites such as wikipedia, encyclopaedia online, dictionary and etc. Other than these websites, i'll always have 2nd thoughts while reading them. Anybody can write about anything on the internet. It is up to us to make a fine line between facts or not.

In my opinion, not all the information from the internet can be believed. Internet contains lots of informations from all kinds of source. Some informations are from reliable source and some are articles or opinion based informations. They can be true and false information as well. Its all depend on us. Some people blindly believe whatever that is written on the internet because the informations are fairly convincing. However, some websites like wikipedia or google scholar is an example of a trustable site. They always provide a correct information on a particular topic. They are all based on facts and references. In conclusion, it is our responsibility to choose information from the correct website in the internet.

NO. I don't take it as truth because although it got a lot of information but it is not more detail and eligible. There are some informations that cant be believed were shown in internet. The advertisements that shown in internet, are cheaters. Beside that, the downloadable informations from the internet might make the systems corrupted. On the other hand, the uncommon webs that try to creat the believeness in humans which it cannot be said as real.

The world has come to a point where technology and cyberspace have become an in-thing amongst us. Scientists, thinkers and even bloggers depend on the vast, precise and concise information posted on the internet. Information from Wikipedia especially, give a clear-cut on various questionnaires. However, I do not wholly trust these information. For instance, Wikipedia administrator allows readers to edit information from articles posted by others. No matter what situation and how precise the information is, the thinking process among readers should be made the most of to make a strict stand of the conciseness of the information. There are various alternatives to minister such thinking process for example, educational books and trusted information-provider magazines which are far more reliable.

I think, i wont believe what ever information or news in the internet very fast. Normally i believe the news that from government website. It's because normally government website have some rules and regulation that are improved. For example, as i taking ptptn loan. I have to follow many rules to apply my loan and it will be approve by education of government. Even i can check up-to-date about my status through online. As for me, I do not trust all the informations from internet. There are various kinds of informations in the internet. Some are informations by researchers and some are informations which not true. They are lots of articles which is written by normal people without considering the facts. Even my lecturers do not encourage us not to take informations from any site because not all are based on research. I can trust informations done by researchers or which has citations. This is because they have done pages of research about the particular topic and contains citation which convinced me it's trust able. Besides, pictures from internet are also can't be trusted because nowadays people simply upload an edited pictures which makes us to believe its true. For me I don't really believe the issue or matters that bring up from the internet easily where we can find they a distributing all kind of extra information which it is in fault statement so that they can make the society to believe and get attract from the issues that bring through the internet rather then believing on newspaper. For an example, sometimes they shows that I had won some cash prize without involving any competition so this makes me not to believe the internet information from the web.So everyone should beware about every words that shown in the website.

No, I do not take everything on the internet as truth. For example, I rather read the newspaper to know about the local or world news rather than reading it on random sites except the newspaper's official website, like The Star. I'm not sure whether the content from the random websites are true or just some made up stories. There are a lot of things on the internet that are made up because it is so easy to change or edit things, especially pictures using powerful softwares such as Adobe Photoshop. There are billions of people using internet everyday and everywhere. Information can be easily uploaded or downloaded. That is why, I can't be too sure whether the information on the internet is true or not because I do know the source of the information.

week 9 FINAL DISCUSSION - YIPPEE??

I do not take what is on the Internet as truth without thinking much about it. Because not all the news from the Internet are totally trust-able. We must be a wise user of Internet while looking for any information online. In my opinion, only our government's websites with their official logos can be trusted. As an Internet consumer, we should cleverly categorize those websites to gather information in the future. Beside government's official websites, we can also visit those websites registered under government. This is because government controls the information that these websites disseminate. Other personal websites contain information based on their environment and opinions.

Whatever on the internet nowadays is not fully based on true stories. Sometimes the news that we get through the internet might be true and sometimes it is not true. Based on my experiences, I had seen a picture of a man died on the railway track with his heads off while I was reading a blog. The caption down the picture states that the picture was real and it had happened in Kulim, Kedah. I saw many people commented their sad expression for that picture. But I didn’t believe it. This is because I am from Kedah and I know that there is no railway track in Kedah. But there are so many people who had believed the picture’s caption. The picture might be true but the caption was totally wrong. That’s the reason why we should not believe any news from the internet without investigating.

MEDIA STEREOTYPES

A stereotype is a commonly held public belief about specific social groups, or types of individuals.Stereotypes can have a negative and positive impact on individuals.Even so-called positive images of Black people can lead to stereotypes about intelligence. One theory as to why people stereotype is that it is too difficult to take in all of the complexities of other people as individuals.Even though stereotyping is inexact, it is an efficient way to mentally organize large blocks of information. Categorization is an essential human capability because it enables us to simplify, predict, and organize our world. These stereotypes often tend to make people to believe it is true
especially to those who don't know the real truth.

MEDIA STEREOTYPES

Stereotypes used in media are often tend to influence the way people think.
People around the world are often influenced by things that media portray to us,
sychological effects of stereotyping, particularly its effect on African Americans and women. For example,a study which found that bogus feedback to college students dramatically affected their IQ test performance, and another in which students were either praised as very smart, congratulated on their hard work, or told that they scored high. The media stereotypes can effect others thoughts easily and make the thing to be in a bad way.

PAVITHIRA TIRUVALLUVAN

MEDIA STEREOTYPES

The media portrays many inaccurate stereotypes about various races. Many movies, TV shows, and newspapers show a less favorable image of minorities than they do of other races. Example, African Americans and Hispanics, in particular are sometimes shown as being less intelligent, more vulgar, and more violent than their Caucasian counterparts. However these facts are not true. Actually most crimes among blacks and Hispanics occur in inner cities, which is a very small percentage of the total population. Still the media sometimes makes it appear as though most blacks and Hispanics are violent.

MEDIA STEREOTYPES

A stereotype is a commonly held public belief about specific social groups, or types of individuals.(wikipedia) Stereotype that presented in all of the movies was the dependency of women upon men. Male characters always participated in helping a female-character to reach the success. In the movie A League Of Their Own most of the women lived with the thoughts about their husbands who were fighting in the war. What makes this example even more interesting is that one can develop a counter-argument, saying that the fact that in these movies men were helping women to achieve the success was instead a break of stereotype, which represents men as those who achieve high goals, and women as those who help to achieve these goals. If we compare the different ways, in which media depicts helping male and helping female characters, we will see that if men help with a wise advice and with their knowledge, then female helps by cooking and taking care of children. This is yet another stereotype in mass media.

Media Stereotypes (Week 8)

Each and everyone in this world is unique and different. We are too complicated and abstract to be labeled or to be grouped into different types of stereotypes. And it is definitely unfair to brand people because of their skin colour, race or ethnicity.

The media played a major role in shaping the mind and the way of thinking of the people. For example the western media succeeded in portraying the Muslims or the Arabs especially as bomb-makers and terrorists, the Jews as stingy , Singaporeans as ‘kiasu’ (selfish, afraid to lose), and etc.

What causes these stereotypes to actually arise? One of the factors is current situation or significant tragedies for example after the 9-11 incident in the United States there was a sudden influx in movies and TV series showing Arabs/Muslims as the bad guys or terrorist. Before the 9-11 attack, the Westerns will usually make the Russians as the bad guy in a movie because of the Cold War and the involvement of the Soviet Union.

There are also positive stereotypes shown by the media for example the Japanese are always shown as very well cultured, punctual, disciplined and very well-mannered people.

Stereotyping to me is always bad and dangerous because it is a type of generalization. Just because an apple in the basket is bad, doesn’t mean that all the apples in the basket are bad too. Always think critically before judging or stereotyping someone.

Media Stereotypes

Stereotypes used in media are often tend to influence the way people think. People around the world are often influenced by things that media portray to us. FoAdd Imager an example, media always portray Sri Lanka people as a refugee and a war country. This makes most people scared to go Sri Lanka. However, the truth is not all Sri Lankans are refugee. There are still rich people in Sri Lanka. Besides that, media also often portray Africa and India as a poor country. This made me to think India is a poor country until one day I went to India and I realized that India is not a poor country as what media show us. These stereotypes often tend to make people to believe it is true especially to those who don't know the real truth.

Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies People

This groundbreaking documentary dissects a slanderous aspect of cinematic history that has run virtually unchallenged form the earliest days of silent film to today's biggest Hollywood blockbusters. Featuring acclaimed author Dr. Jack Shaheen.

Media Stereotypes

The media often uses stereotypes and it is significantly accepted by the people. It has made us think and believe certain things should be this way and not otherwise, and thus this is wrong, because it not a fact, it is not true and certainly not what everyone thinks. For example, in magazines, they often portray models as beautiful women, who are young, have flawless skin, tall and thin. This has lead people thinking only skinny women are considered beautiful, while it is not. In movies, they are also a lot of stereotyping, like blonde women are always dumb and shallow, Russians are the mobs or the mafia, Mexicans are portrayed as illegal runaways, and American Africans are shown as people dealing with drugs or involve in gang fights. This had lead us, especially young children, who haven't had much experience, to be easily influenced by these media stereotypes. In most television series, they often show rich kids to be spoiled brats and pick on others, the popular ones in school and always surrounded by cool people. In addition, mostly these popular rich kids are always the cheerleaders for girls and football players for the boys in school. Everyone around the world who watches, would be influenced to think that rich kids are spoiled and often rules over the school. We should all be aware of all these media stereotypes as to not discriminate and group or categorize people.

Ever since I was small, I used to watch many English movies. By watching

in his office is very arrogant and not friendly at all. My dad was telling

that the guy thinks that he is so intelligent thus he look down at the

other employees as if they are not good enough. when I heard about it, I

Media Stereotypes

Media plays a vital role in spreading stereotypes among people. Media like magazines, movie,TV and so on should receive the credit for this. Examples of stereotypes are; short men are short- tempered and fat people are lazy ones. Most of the movies nowadays, visualize fat people as lazy and incapable society. Its not true, not all fat people are lazy to do works. Besides that, in most western movies, short man will be picturized as the short-tempered person. I was scared to go near short people when i was still young because of this. I realise now that dwarfism does not cause anger in one person.

The word “blogger” means Any person who expresses themselves via online media. The term has been stretched to mean not just writers of blogs, but people who post comments on other blogs, photobloggers, show up at blogger dinners uninvited. the word "journalist" means collecting, writing, editing, and presenting of news or news articles in newspapers and magazines and in radio and television broadcasts. They are two different things. Bloggers has felt free to express themselves, air opinions and promote themselves - and, by extension, their products and services. It’s that olden, golden rule; by positioning oneself as a figure of authority on a subject, it seems that halo can also envelop one’s products and services. Something most consultants know and do well. But journalists disadvantaged because they have a code of ethics and rules to follow. so as a conclusion bloogers and journalists are different from each other..

In my opinion, bloggers are not journalist. A journalist delivers facts and true news to the society. They cannot freely write their own opinions. They have to do research about a matter before they publishing it. Journalists are also bound to certain rules and limits. Whereas bloggers usually write stuffs which are based on their own opinion. This cannot be taken into count because it is not a fact therefore it is not accurate. Besides, things that is written by a journalist can be used as a reference as well. While a blogger is a person who writes Weblogs. So for me, the journalist and blogger is a writer, but have different characteristics. For a journalist they will make a detailed study or reseach first on what they will write before disseminate to the public. This differs from a blogger, they tend to write whatever comes to mind without making any prior study or research and sometimes what is written by a blogger can trigger the anger of the public.

FATIMAH DARWIS

Are Bloggers Journalists?

In my opinion, I don't think bloggers are journalists. Journalists find, collect and disseminate information about current events and issues. Usually what they found and let out to the public are more about general issues and are facts. On the other hand, bloggers are different because it is more personal. Bloggers write what they feel or think about on a certain event or issue and this differs with each and every blogger. Journalists are bound to a set of rules as they cannot simply write just about anything or how they want it. For example, they cannot be bias or insert foul language as it is to serve the public good. Bloggers, however, they have the freedom of speech but at the same time they shouldn't go overboard. I agree that bloggers should be legally protected but only for those who are serious bloggers. If the privilege is given to all bloggers, then it is unfair to the journalists because they can't express freely like bloggers do and yet bloggers are protected. Then, it would seem that there is no difference between a journalist and a blogger, which in fact, they do work in different ways.

Leong Lai Yee
1091103642

Are Bloggers Journalist?

Bloggers is as similar as journalists where their sole purpose is to communicate. However, the writings are treated differently. Bloggers may freely express their feelings, judgement, and opinion while journalists are highly burdened with authority guidelines, ethics, and laws. I believe that it was all started when the society had enough of the conventional journalism that is heavily influenced by politics. That is when people start to look for alternative sources of information and it so happens that the internet comes into use. These days, some bloggers are even more influential than the conventional journalists regardless of their background and credibility on the subject matter. There are many cases where bloggers claimed they should be protected under journalism law after being sued. It is simple to say that, they shall be protected as long as they assume responsibility of their writings and that includes proper research and investigation to avoid inaccuracy which could cost a lot of money. The intellectuality of journalism should be protected. As much as bloggers want to believe that they are journalists, they have a lot more to learn, especially ethics of writing and way of working.

In my opinion, a blogger can be a journalist as he is disseminating news among people as well even though his writings are opinion, observation and research based. BUT, a blogger's freedom to write should be limited to avoid any inaccurate information to be spread out. A blogger should always bare in mind that journalism is a job that requires responsibility. They must know that it is their duty to give people the accurate information about an event. They should not be writing without control about something.
